Lahore (Urdu and Punjabi: لاہور) is the capital city of Punjab, Pakistan. It is one of the country's largest cities and is an important center of culture, education, literature, commerce, and history.[1]

Lahore has played an important role in the history of the Punjab region and contains architecture and cultural sites from several historical periods. The city's major landmarks include Lahore Fort, the Shalimar Gardens, Badshahi Mosque, Minar-e-Pakistan, and the Walled City of Lahore.[2]

History

Lahore has a long history, although the exact date of its origin is uncertain. Historical accounts recorded by the Government of Punjab describe the city as an established settlement by the medieval period.[3]

The city became especially prominent during the Mughal period. Mughal rulers developed Lahore as an important administrative and cultural center, and major monuments from this period remain part of the city's architectural heritage.[3]

Lahore later became an important center of the Sikh Empire. During the nineteenth century it came under British rule, which continued until the independence and partition of British India in 1947.[3]

After the creation of Pakistan, Lahore continued as the capital of Punjab province.

Geography

Lahore is located in northeastern Punjab, Pakistan. The Ravi River runs along the northern side of the city, and Lahore lies close to Pakistan's international border with India.[1]

The city is connected with other parts of Pakistan by road, rail, and air. Allama Iqbal International Airport serves Lahore and surrounding areas.[1]

Culture

Lahore is widely associated with literature, art, architecture, education, food, and cultural life.

In 2019, UNESCO designated Lahore a Creative City of Literature as part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network.[4]

The city's literary traditions include poetry, publishing, libraries, festivals, and educational institutions. UNESCO describes Lahore as having a long literary and educational tradition.[4]

Architecture and heritage

Lahore contains major examples of Mughal architecture.

Lahore Fort and the Shalimar Gardens were jointly inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1981. UNESCO describes the two sites as major examples of Mughal artistic and architectural achievement from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.[5]

Other well-known landmarks include:

Education and literature

Lahore has a longstanding role as an educational and literary center in Pakistan.

The city is home to universities, colleges, libraries, publishing houses, cultural organizations, and literary events. Its designation as a UNESCO City of Literature reflects the continuing role of books, poetry, publishing, and literary culture in the city.[4]

Transportation

Lahore is connected to Pakistan's national road and railway networks.

Lahore railway station serves long-distance passenger services, while Allama Iqbal International Airport provides domestic and international air connections.[1]

Major roads connect Lahore with cities including Islamabad, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Multan.
