Emirates is an international airline based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Its legal name is Emirates, and the airline uses the IATA designator EK and ICAO code UAE.[1] Emirates is a Dubai corporation established by Decree No. 2 of 1985 of the Government of Dubai and is wholly owned by the Government of Dubai.[2]
Emirates is one of the main businesses of the Emirates Group, which also includes dnata and other businesses in aviation, travel, logistics, hospitality, and related sectors.[3]
History
The origins of Emirates date to 1984, when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum asked Sir Maurice Flanagan, then managing director of dnata, to examine the creation of a new airline in Dubai. A business plan was prepared by December 1984, and the name Emirates was selected for the airline.[4]
In March 1985, Flanagan was tasked with launching the airline within five months with US$10 million in seed funding. Emirates began operations on 25 October 1985 with flights from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai. The first services used a Boeing 737 and an Airbus A300 B4 wet-leased from Pakistan International Airlines.[4]
Emirates received its first owned aircraft, an Airbus A310-304, on 3 July 1987. During its first five years, the airline expanded its network to destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.[4]
Operations
Emirates is headquartered at the Emirates Group Headquarters Building in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.[2]
By 31 March 2026, the airline's global network covered 152 cities in 80 countries. Emirates also reported 32 codeshare partners and 117 interline partners, providing connections to more destinations beyond its own network.[5]
The airline's main operating hub is in Dubai, which serves as the central connecting point for its international passenger network.
Fleet
Emirates operates a wide-body aircraft fleet consisting primarily of the Airbus A380, Airbus A350, and Boeing 777.[6]
At 31 March 2026, Emirates reported a total fleet of 277 aircraft. During the 2025–26 financial year, the airline received 15 Airbus A350 aircraft, bringing the number of A350s in its fleet to 19 at the end of the reporting period.[5]
Emirates has been a major operator of both the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777, while the Airbus A350 has become the newest aircraft family to enter its passenger fleet.[7]
Services
Emirates provides international passenger air transportation. Depending on the aircraft and route, its passenger cabins include Economy Class, Premium Economy, Business Class, and First Class.
Emirates SkyCargo is the air-freight division of Emirates. It operates through Dubai and provides cargo capacity using passenger aircraft and dedicated freighters. In 2026, Emirates described SkyCargo as connecting more than 150 destinations across six continents.[8]
Emirates Skywards is the loyalty programme of Emirates and flydubai. It was launched in May 2000 and allows members to earn and use Skywards Miles on flights and through participating partners.[9]
Management
Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum serves as Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group. Sir Tim Clark serves as President of Emirates Airline.[10]
Other senior executives include Adel Ahmad Al Redha, Deputy President and Chief Operations Officer, and Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer.[10]
Financial performance
For the financial year ended 31 March 2026, Emirates reported revenue of AED 130.9 billion and profit before tax of AED 22.8 billion.[5]
Reuters reported that Emirates recorded net profit of about US$5.4 billion for the 2025–26 financial year.[11]
