The origins of Emirates date to 1984, when Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum asked Sir Maurice Flanagan, then managing director of dnata, to examine the creation of a new airline in Dubai. In March 1985, Flanagan was tasked with launching the airline within five months with US$10 million in seed funding. Emirates began operations on 25 October 1985 with flights from Dubai to Karachi and Mumbai. The first services used a Boeing 737 and an Airbus A300 B4 wet-leased from Pakistan International Airlines.<ref name="timeline" />

Emirates received its first owned aircraft, an Airbus A310-304, on 3 July 1987. During its first five years, the airline expanded its network to destinations across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.<ref name="timeline" />
